International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights. The UN theme for the International Women's Day 2019 was: 'Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change'. The focus of the theme was exploring innovative ways to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure. The achievement of the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires transformative shifts, integrated approaches and new solutions, particularly when it comes to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. The International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
The 2019 theme inspired Girls Voices Initiative to focuses on innovative ways to close the internet gap and target vulnerable adolescent girls with digital literacy skills that empowers them to create fun and inspiring technology.
Girls Voices Initiative team celebrated the International Women’s Day 2019 with 25 adolescent girls from Divine Vision Academy. An engaging STEM activity was conducted with the girls - building a Raspberry Pi photobooth. The group of girls were divided into two groups – the engineers and the design groups – the engineers were taught to setup the Raspberry Pi and program the Pi to take pictures and post to Google photos. The design group worked on the creating the housing of the Raspberry Pi to form the Pi photobooth. Together the girls put their creation together and took great exciting photos together to celebrate their innovation. Some of the girls also had an interesting coding session learning to use the scratch software. Indeed Girls CAN! #GirlsInnovate
