March 8 is the International Women’s Day (IWD), the day is set aside to globally celebrate women’s achievements. In 2019, the theme for the IWD, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change” catalyzed efforts to innovate ways to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of providing digital skills to empower women and girls, and to introduce them to the vibrant online community that inspires women to connect their voices for social change.

Girls Voices Initiative, in collaboration with World Pulse Inc., marked the 2019 International Women’s Day with an innovation project to build the skills of girls and women to create a Raspberry Pi Photo Booth. The skills learned empowered the girls and women to take great pictures and share with their families, friends, and customers via Google Photos. Also, the women were introduced to the World Pulse community and learned to use the World Pulse digital platform to share their stories and launch digital action campaigns to advocate for their needs and interests in society.

Participants comprised community schoolgirls and community women (the community women were a combination of civil servants, female teachers, mothers, and businesswomen who valued the skills that were taught and used it to improve their education, work, or business enterprise. Participants comprised 25 schoolgirls from a community school, Divine Vision Academy, by Idu Yard, Abuja and 25 women from Orozo Community, Abuja.

The event was hands-on as the goal of the activity was to have the girls and women take away the skills that allowed them to practice on their own and create their own Raspberry Pi Photo Booth for their school, salons, tailoring shop or other business spaces. The activities were coordinated by vibrant women facilitators who inspired the participants to innovate and advocate for girls and women in STEM.

Join us in a productive and rewarding celebration of the International Women’s Day 2019.
